List of Eurovision Song Contest winners
Overview
The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual international song competition, held primarily among the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The contest has been broadcast every year since its inauguration in 1956, making it one of the longest-running television shows in the world. It is also one of the most-watched non-sporting events globally, with audience figures having been quoted in recent years as anything between 100 million and 600 million internationally.
History
The Eurovision Song Contest was established by the EBU, with the first contest held in Lugano, Switzerland, in 1956. The contest's format has evolved over the years, with the current format involving a series of two semi-finals, from which the best-scoring countries proceed to a grand final. The contest has been hosted by the previous year's winning country since 1958, with the exception of 1963, 1972, 1974, 1980, and 2020.
Winners
The winner of the Eurovision Song Contest is selected through a combination of jury votes and televotes from each participating country. Each country awards two sets of 12, 10, 8–1 points to their 10 favourite songs: one set from their professional jury, and the other from televotes. The country with the highest number of points is declared the winner.
