Massiel, born María de los Ángeles Felisa Santamaría Espinosa, is a Spanish pop singer who gained international fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1968. Born on August 2, 1947, in Madrid, Spain, Massiel grew up in a family deeply rooted in the arts. Her father, Emilio Santamaría, was a renowned film director, while her mother, Ángeles Espinosa, was a successful actress.
Career
Massiel's career began at a young age when she was discovered by producer Augusto Algueró. Her debut album, "Massiel," was released in 1966, featuring the hit single "Di que no." The album's success led to her being chosen as Spain's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1968.
At Eurovision, Massiel performed the song "La, la, la," which was originally intended for singer Joan Manuel Serrat. However, Serrat was replaced by Massiel after he insisted on performing the song in Catalan, a language that was suppressed under Franco's dictatorship. Despite the controversy, Massiel's performance won the contest, marking the first time Spain had ever won Eurovision.
Following her Eurovision win, Massiel's career skyrocketed. She released several successful albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including "Rosas en el mar," "Baladas y canciones de Bertolt Brecht," and "Tierra."
