Early Life and Formation
Måneskin is an Italian rock band from Rome. The band was formed in 2016 and consists of four members: Damiano David (lead vocals), Victoria De Angelis (bass), Thomas Raggi (guitar), and Ethan Torchio (drums). The band members met while attending the same high school in Rome and decided to form a band due to their shared passion for rock music. The band's name, Måneskin, means "moonlight" in Danish, a tribute to bassist De Angelis' Danish heritage.
Career
2016-2017: Formation and Street Performing
Måneskin started their career as street performers in the piazzas of Rome. They gained local popularity for their energetic performances and unique blend of rock, reggae, and funk music. During this time, they also began writing their own songs, drawing inspiration from a variety of musical genres and artists.
2017-2018: X Factor Italy and First EP
In 2017, Måneskin auditioned for the eleventh season of the Italian version of the X Factor. They quickly gained national attention for their dynamic performances and original songwriting. Despite finishing in second place, the band signed a contract with Sony Music Italy shortly after the show's conclusion. In December 2017, they released their debut EP, "Chosen", which peaked at number 3 on the Italian Albums Chart.
2018-2020: First Album and Breakthrough
In 2018, Måneskin released their first full-length album, "Il ballo della vita". The album was a commercial success, reaching number 1 on the Italian Albums Chart and being certified 4x Platinum by the FIMI. The album's lead single, "Torna a casa", also reached number 1 on the Italian Singles Chart.
In 2019, the band embarked on their first European tour, performing in cities such as London, Paris, and Berlin. They also performed at several music festivals, including the Rock in Rome and the Sziget Festival in Budapest.
2021-Present: Eurovision Song Contest and International Success
In 2021, Måneskin represented Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest with their song "Zitti e buoni". They won the contest with 524 points, marking Italy's third victory in the contest and their first since 1990. Following their Eurovision win, the band gained international recognition and their music charted in several countries outside of Italy.
Musical Style and Influences
Måneskin's music is primarily rock, but they incorporate elements of other genres such as funk, reggae, and pop into their sound.
