Zhytomyr

Geography

Zhytomyr is located in the northern part of Ukraine, serving as the administrative center of the Zhytomyr Oblast. It is situated on the banks of the Teteriv River, a tributary of the Dnieper River. The city is surrounded by a mix of flat plains and hilly terrain, with a number of small rivers and streams crisscrossing the area.

History

The city of Zhytomyr has a rich and complex history. It was first mentioned in historical records in 884 AD, making it one of the oldest cities in the region. Over the centuries, it has been under the rule of various powers, including the Kievan Rus', the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire.

During the Second World War, Zhytomyr was occupied by German forces and suffered significant damage. Post-war reconstruction efforts led to the development of the city's infrastructure and industrial sector.

Demographics

As of the latest census, Zhytomyr has a population of approximately 270,000 people. The majority of the population are ethnic Ukrainians, with a significant minority of Russians. The city is also home to smaller communities of Poles, Belarusians, and Jews.

Economy

Zhytomyr's economy is diverse, with significant contributions from various sectors. The city is a major hub for the production of granite and other building materials, thanks to the abundant granite quarries in the region.
