Overview
Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) is the research and development arm of The Walt Disney Company. It is responsible for the creation, design, and construction of Disney theme parks and attractions worldwide. The division was founded in 1952 as WED Enterprises (from Walter Elias Disney), to oversee the production of Disneyland Park.
History
Walt Disney Imagineering was established by Walt Disney in 1952 to help bring his vision of Disneyland to life. The original Imagineers were recruited from a variety of Disney Studios departments, and included artists, designers, engineers, and architects. The team was initially tasked with designing Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, which opened in 1955.
Design Philosophy
The design philosophy of Walt Disney Imagineering is rooted in storytelling. Every attraction, restaurant, shop, and architectural element in a Disney park is designed to contribute to a cohesive narrative. This approach is often referred to as "themed design", a concept pioneered by Walt Disney and his original team of Imagineers.
Projects
Over the years, Walt Disney Imagineering has been responsible for the design and construction of eleven theme parks, a town, four cruise ships, dozens of resort hotels, and countless attractions. Some of the most iconic projects include Disneyland Park, Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disney Resort.
Departments
Walt Disney Imagineering is composed of a variety of departments, each with its own specialized focus. These include the Creative Development department, the Engineering department, the Production department, the Research & Development department, and the Project Management department.
