Early Life

Tiberius was born on November 16, 42 BC, in Rome, to Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia Drusilla. His mother divorced Nero and married Octavian Augustus in 39 BC, making him a step-son of Octavian. Tiberius was raised to be a soldier and made his career in the Roman army.

Military Career

Tiberius began his military career in 20 BC. He was appointed as a military tribune under Augustus and served in Spain, Armenia, and the Balkans. His military successes, including the capture of the city of Artaxata, led to his adoption by Augustus as his heir.

Reign as Emperor

Tiberius ascended to the throne as the second emperor of Rome in AD 14, following the death of Augustus. His reign was marked by economic stability and territorial expansion but was also characterized by political repression and the increasing power of the Praetorian guards.

Later Life and Death

In his later years, Tiberius became increasingly reclusive and paranoid, retiring to the island of Capri. He died on March 16, AD 37, and was succeeded by his grand-nephew and adopted grandson, Caligula.

Legacy

Tiberius is remembered as a successful military leader and a competent administrator. However, his autocratic rule and the political purges of his reign have led to a largely negative view of his legacy.
