Supermoto
Introduction
Supermoto, also known as Supermotard, is a motorcycle racing discipline that combines elements from various other forms of motorcycle sports, including road racing, motocross, and dirt track racing. The sport originated in the United States in the late 1970s as an offshoot of motocross and has since gained popularity worldwide.
History
The concept of Supermoto was born out of the American television show "Superbikers," which was aired by ABC's Wide World of Sports in the late 1970s. The show aimed to find the best all-around motorcycle racer by pitting professionals from different racing disciplines against each other on a special track that combined elements of road racing, dirt track racing, and motocross. This format was later adopted and refined into the sport now known as Supermoto.
Bike Specifications
Supermoto bikes are typically custom-built to handle the unique demands of the sport. They are often based on off-road or motocross bikes, with modifications made for improved performance on pavement. These modifications may include changes to the suspension, tires, and brakes, as well as the addition of road-legal equipment such as lights and mirrors.
Race Format
Supermoto races typically take place on closed circuit tracks that feature a mix of road and dirt sections. The road sections are often paved with asphalt, while the dirt sections may include jumps and other obstacles commonly found in motocross. This combination of surfaces tests the riders' skill and adaptability, as they must be able to handle the bike effectively on both types of terrain.
Riding Techniques
Supermoto riding techniques are a blend of those used in road racing and motocross. On the road sections, riders use techniques similar to those in road racing, such as late braking and leaning into corners. On the dirt sections, riders must use motocross techniques, such as sliding the rear wheel and using the throttle to control the bike's direction.
Competitions
Supermoto competitions are held at both the amateur and professional levels, with events taking place in many countries around the world. The sport is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), which organizes the Supermoto World Championship. National governing bodies, such as the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) in the United States, also organize their own championship series.
