Geography
The Republic of Korea, commonly known as South Korea, is located on the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is bordered by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) to the north, the Yellow Sea to the west, and the Sea of Japan to the east. The southern boundary is formed by the Korea Strait, which separates it from Japan.
History
South Korea's history is rich and complex, with influences from various dynasties, colonial periods, and modern developments. The earliest known Korean kingdoms date back to the first century BC, with the Three Kingdoms period (57 BC – 668 AD) being a significant era of cultural and political growth. Government and Politics
South Korea is a presidential republic with a multi-party system. The President is the head of state and government, elected by popular vote for a single five-year term. The legislative branch is the National Assembly, a unicameral body with 300 members. The judiciary is independent, with the Supreme Court being the highest court in the country.
Economy
South Korea has a mixed economy, ranking 11th nominal GDP and 12th purchasing power parity (PPP) globally. It is known for its technologically advanced and digitally-connected society, with strong industries in electronics, automobiles, shipbuilding, petrochemicals, and robotics. Major corporations such as Samsung, Hyundai, and LG are based in South Korea.
Culture
South Korean culture is a blend of traditional Korean elements and Western influences. The country is known for its rich heritage in music, dance, and visual arts, dating back to ancient times. In recent years, the global popularity of K-pop and Korean dramas has led to the rise of the Korean Wave, spreading Korean culture worldwide.
Education
Education in South Korea is provided by both public schools and private schools. The education system is highly competitive, with a strong emphasis on high academic achievement. South Korea is known for its high educational performance and is home to several world-class universities, including Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University.
