Natural Language Processing in Artificial Intelligence
Introduction
Natural Language Processing is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence that focuses on the interaction between computers and humans through natural language. The ultimate objective of NLP is to read, decipher, understand, and make sense of the human language in a valuable way. This field of AI combines computational linguistics—rule and statistical modeling of human language—with machine learning, and deep learning models.
History of Natural Language Processing
The history of Natural Language Processing dates back to the 1950s, with the rise of machine translation systems. The Georgetown experiment in 1954 involved fully automatic translation of more than sixty Russian sentences into English. However, the promise of early machine translation research, which suggested that comprehensive machine translation would be possible within a few years, was not fulfilled.
In the 1960s, more sophisticated methods of language processing were developed, such as the implementation of ELIZA, a computer program that simulated a psychotherapist by using pattern matching and substitution methodology. This was followed by PARRY in the 1970s, which simulated a person with paranoid schizophrenia.
The 1980s and 1990s marked the era of statistical methods in NLP, which made it possible to make soft, probabilistic decisions based on attaching real-valued weights to features in input data. The cache language models upon which many speech recognition systems now rely are examples of such statistical models.
The 2000s saw the growth of machine learning algorithms for language processing, due to increasing computational power (see Moore's law) and the availability of large amounts of data (see Big data).
The 2010s were characterized by the widespread adoption of deep learning techniques for NLP. These techniques, based on neural networks, allow for the processing of large amounts of data and the extraction of complex patterns, leading to state-of-the-art results in many NLP tasks.

Text-to-Speech is a type of assistive technology that reads digital text aloud. It is used to convert information from a computer into audible language.

Named Entity Recognition is a subtask of information extraction that seeks to locate and classify named entities in text into pre-defined categories such as person names, organizations, locations, medical codes, time expressions, quantities, monetary values, percentages, etc.
Sentiment Analysis
Sentiment Analysis, also known as opinion mining, is a subfield of NLP that tries to identify and extract opinions within a given text. The aim of sentiment analysis is to gauge the attitude, sentiments, evaluations, appraisals, and emotions of a speaker/writer based on the computational treatment of subjectivity in a text.
