Mike Newell
Early Life and Education
Mike Newell was born on 28 March 1942 in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. He attended St Albans School and later studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he read English. His interest in film began at an early age, and he made his first short film while still in school.
Career
Newell began his career in the British film industry as an assistant director on the film "The Collector" in 1965. He then moved on to work for the BBC, where he directed various television dramas including "Play for Today" and "The Man in the Iron Mask". His first major success came with the film "Dance with a Stranger" in 1985, which was a critical and commercial success.
