Arsenal F.C.
History
Arsenal Football Club is a professional football club based in Islington, London, England. The club was first formed in 1886 as Dial Square by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, south-east London, before being renamed as Royal Arsenal shortly afterwards. In 1893, the club became the first from the south of England to join the Football League, and they were renamed again to Woolwich Arsenal. In 1913, the club moved north across the city to Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, and their name was shortened to Arsenal F.C. in 1914. Arsenal's period of success began in the 1930s, when they won five League Championships and two FA Cups under the management of Herbert Chapman and his successor George Allison.
Club Identity
The club's colours have traditionally been red and white, although these have evolved through history. The team originally played in a dark red kit, similar to the maroon shirts worn in the 2005–06 season. Arsenal's emblem has also changed several times in attempts to modernize or rebrand. The old Latin motto "Victoria Concordia Crescit", which translates to "Victory Comes from Harmony", was removed in the 2002 rebranding.
Stadium
Arsenal have played home matches at two stadiums in their history. The first was Manor Ground in Plumstead, where Arsenal played from their founding in 1886 until 1913. In 1913, the club moved to Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, North London, where they played until 2006. In 2006, the club moved to the newly built Emirates Stadium, a 60,260 capacity all-seater stadium in nearby Holloway.
