Public Universities
State University of New York (SUNY)
The State University of New York (SUNY) is the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States, with a total enrollment of 1.3 million students, plus 30,000 employees spread among 64 campuses across the state. Within New York City, SUNY operates 11 senior colleges, known as the Downstate Medical Center, Fashion Institute of Technology, and nine campuses of the City University of New York (CUNY).
City University of New York (CUNY)
The City University of New York (CUNY) is the public university system of New York City, and the largest urban university system in the United States. CUNY and the State University of New York (SUNY) are separate and independent university systems, despite the fact that both public institutions receive funding from New York State. CUNY has 24 institutions: 11 senior colleges, seven community colleges, one undergraduate honors college, and seven post-graduate institutions.
Private Universities
Columbia University
Columbia University is a private Ivy League research university in Upper Manhattan. Established in 1754, Columbia is the oldest institution of higher education in New York and the fifth-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It is one of nine colonial colleges founded prior to the Declaration of Independence, seven of which belong to the Ivy League.
New York University
New York University (NYU) is a private research university based in New York City. Founded in 1831 by Albert Gallatin as an institution to "admit based upon merit rather than birthright or social class", NYU's historical campus is in Greenwich Village. Today it is one of the largest private universities in the United States.
Community Colleges
CUNY Community Colleges
The City University of New York (CUNY) operates seven community colleges throughout New York City. These include Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, and Kingsborough Community College among others. These colleges offer associate degrees in a variety of disciplines.
