Green Arrow
Origin and Creation
Green Arrow is a fictional superhero who appears in comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Mort Weisinger and designed by George Papp, he first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in November 1941. His real name is Oliver Jonas Queen, a wealthy businessman and owner of Queen Industries who is also a well-known celebrity in his home of Star City. Green Arrow was initially developed as an archery-themed analogue of the very popular Batman character, but writers at DC subsequently developed him into a voice of left-wing politics very much distinct in character from Batman.
Character Biography
Oliver Queen was a spoiled, thrill-seeking playboy, until he was left stranded on a deserted island for several years. There, he had to learn to survive by his wits and an improvised bow & arrow. Upon his return to Star City, he took on the guise of Green Arrow to fight crime in his city.
Skills and Abilities
Green Arrow is a peak human physical specimen and an expert in martial arts and acrobatics. His primary weapon is a bow and arrow, which he wields with exceptional skill. His archery skills are considered to be on par with those of Hawkeye from Marvel Comics. He has been known to shoot an arrow down the barrel of a gun, pierce a drop of water as it leaves a tap, and shoot almost any part of the human body; although he aims only to wound and not kill when he shoots. He uses a variety of trick arrows, including explosive, knockout gas, grappling hook, flash grenade, tear gas, and even kryptonite arrows for use against superpowered foes.
Supporting Characters
Over the years, Green Arrow has been assisted by several other heroes including his sidekick Speedy, his love interest Black Canary, and his fellow members of the Justice League.
Legacy
Green Arrow has been a consistent presence in DC comics since his inception and has been a member of the Justice League and the Outsiders. He has had several ongoing series, limited series and one-shots. The character has been adapted into television and film on multiple occasions, with the most notable portrayal being by Stephen Amell in the CW Arrowverse.
