History

Xavier University was founded as a men's college in 1831 in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. The school was named after Saint Francis Xavier, a Basque Jesuit, by Bishop Edward Fenwick. In 1840, the Society of Jesus took control of the institution and continued to operate it until 1969 when it became an independent university. The university moved to its current location in 1912, due to the need for more space. The original downtown campus was turned into a high school, St. Xavier High School.

The university also has a strong Greek life with several fraternities and sororities on campus. Xavier's athletic teams, known as the Musketeers, compete in the Big East Conference.

Xavier University has produced a number of notable alumni in various fields. These include John Boehner, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives; Sherrod Brown, U.S. Senator from Ohio; and David West, former NBA player.
