History
The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) is a public university located in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Established in 1876, it was originally founded as the Iowa State Normal School, a teacher training institution. The university's evolution over the years reflects broader trends in higher education in the United States, transitioning from a specialized institution to a comprehensive university offering a wide range of academic programs. In 1909, the institution was renamed the Iowa State Teachers College, reflecting its primary mission of training educators. By 1961, the name was changed to the State College of Iowa, and in 1967, it became the University of Northern Iowa, marking its expansion into a full-fledged university.
