History

UNESCO was created in the aftermath of World War II to foster intellectual solidarity and cooperation among nations. The organization's constitution, signed on November 16, 1945, came into force on November 4, 1946, after being ratified by 20 countries. The first General Conference took place in Paris from November 19 to December 10, 1946, with 44 countries represented.

Objectives and Functions

UNESCO's primary objective is to contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among nations through education, science, and culture. The organization seeks to increase universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedom proclaimed in the United Nations Charter.

Structure

UNESCO's structure consists of the General Conference, the Executive Board, and the Secretariat. The General Conference, which meets every two years, is the organization's supreme decision-making body. The Executive Board, composed of 58 members, oversees the execution of the program adopted by the General Conference. The Secretariat, headed by the Director-General, implements the decisions of the General Conference and the Executive Board.
