Tamela Jean Johnson was born on June 9, 1966, in Fort Worth, Texas, United States. She was the youngest of 14 children in her family. Raised in a spiritual and musical environment, Mann's childhood was deeply influenced by the church and gospel music. Mann's professional music career began in the 1980s when she joined the gospel musical group, Kirk Franklin and the Family.
