Swan Lake

Overview

Swan Lake is a timeless ballet composed by Tchaikovsky in 1875-76. Despite its initial failure, it is now one of the most popular of all ballets. The scenario, initially in four acts, was fashioned from Russian folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The choreographer of the original production was Reisinger. The ballet was premiered by the Bolshoi in 1877. It has been performed by many ballet companies worldwide since.

Composition History

The ballet was composed in 1875-76 for a commission by the Moscow Imperial Theatres. The ballet's original title, as indicated by the score, was The Lake of the Swans or Lake of the Swans, and it was first presented under that title to the public in 1877. However, it was not successful. In the early 1890s, Petipa and Ivanov substantially revised the ballet, and it is their version that is most often performed today.

Plot

The story of the ballet is based on a German fairy tale. This tale was probably tweaked by Tchaikovsky and his friends during the ballet's early discussion stages. The ballet's story is complex and may be interpreted in many ways. It is based on two rival forces: the White Swan (Odette), symbolizing purity and innocence, and the Black Swan (Odile), symbolizing evil and deception.

Music

Tchaikovsky's music is inspired and complex. Unlike the music for The Sleeping Beauty, Tchaikovsky's score for Swan Lake was crafted as a symphony: although it contains dances at various points, a danceable tune does not always emerge. The music of Swan Lake is thought to be one of Tchaikovsky's finest, along with his other ballets.

Choreography

The choreography in the original production was not well-received. However, it was revived, revised, and kept alive by Petipa and Ivanov, two of the greatest choreographers in ballet history. Their version of the ballet is the one most often performed today.
