Overview
Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) is a private comprehensive research university in South Korea. The university has two campuses: the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in the capital, Seoul, and the Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon. SKKU operates three affiliated hospitals for medical research and practice.
History
Sungkyunkwan University was founded in 1398 during the Joseon Dynasty. It was originally established as a royal Confucian academy to cultivate scholars and officials. The university's name, "Sungkyunkwan", translates to "Institution for Educating People", reflecting its founding philosophy.
In the 19th century, the university was modernized and expanded under the Gabo Reform. In 1946, it was reorganized into a modern university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.
