Sochi
Geography
Sochi is a city in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, located on the Black Sea coast near the border between Georgia/Abkhazia and Russia. The Greater Sochi area, which includes territories and localities subordinated to Sochi proper, has a total area of 3,526 square kilometers (1,361 sq mi), making it one of the largest cities in the world by area. The city is situated in the southern extents of the Russian Federation, within the federal subject of Krasnodar Krai.
History
The area of the city has been inhabited for thousands of years, with the earliest evidence of human settlement dating back to the Paleolithic era. The Adyghe people had a kingdom here in the Middle Ages. The area was under the control of the Ottoman Empire for a period of time, but was later taken by the Russian Empire in 1829. The city of Sochi itself was established in 1838.
Climate
Sochi has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters (average 11 °C (52 °F) during the day and 4 °C (39 °F) at night) in the period from December to March and warm summers (average 24 °C (75 °F) during the day and 16 °C (61 °F) at night) in the period from May to October.
Economy
Sochi's economy is primarily based on tourism, with the city being one of Russia's most popular tourist destinations. The city's economy is also supported by the construction industry, as well as agriculture, particularly the cultivation of tea and citrus fruits.
Infrastructure
Sochi is well-connected by various modes of transport. The city is served by the Sochi International Airport, one of the busiest in Russia. The city also has a well-developed road network, including the M27 Highway, and is connected to other parts of Russia by the North Caucasus railway. The city's public transport system includes buses, trolleybuses, and trams.
Culture
Sochi is home to numerous cultural institutions, including the Winter Theatre, the Sochi Art Museum, and the Sochi Circus. The city also hosts various cultural events and festivals throughout the year, such as the Sochi International Film Festival and the Sochi Jazz Festival.
Sports
Sochi is known for its sporting events. The city hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2014 Winter Paralympics, and was one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The city is also home to the Sochi Autodrom, which hosts the Russian Grand Prix.
