Småland
Geography
Småland is a historical province, or landskap, in the southern part of Sweden. It borders Blekinge, Scania (or Skåne), Halland, Västergötland, Östergötland and the island province of Öland in the Baltic Sea. The name Småland translates to Small Lands, referring to its constituent small regions: Finnveden, Möre, Tjust, Sevede, Aspeland, Handbörd, Tveta, and Kinda. The topography of Småland is characterized by its rocky, hilly terrain with many forests and interspersed with numerous lakes.
History
The history of Småland dates back to the Stone Age when the region was inhabited by nomadic hunter-gatherers. The region has a rich archaeological heritage with numerous ancient remains such as runestones, burial mounds, and Iron Age fortifications. During the Viking Age, Småland was a center of iron production, with evidence of over 700 ancient iron production sites. The region was formally recognized as a province of Sweden in the 13th century.
