Sichuan University

History

Sichuan University (SCU) is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China, located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The university traces its origins back to the Jinjiang Shuyuan, a Confucian academy founded in 1740 during the Qing Dynasty. Over the centuries, it underwent several transformations and mergers, eventually becoming Sichuan University in 1926.

During the early 20th century, the university played a significant role in the May Fourth Movement, a cultural and political movement that sought to modernize China. In 1994, Sichuan University merged with the Chengdu University of Science and Technology, and in 2000, it merged again with the West China University of Medical Sciences, forming the current comprehensive institution.
