History

Santa Monica College (SMC) is a public community college located in Santa Monica, California. Established in 1929, it began as a small institution with only 153 students and a handful of faculty members. Over the decades, SMC has grown significantly, becoming one of the largest and most respected community colleges in the United States. The college was initially founded as Santa Monica Junior College and was part of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District until it became an independent district in 1970.
