Rhode Island School of Design
History
The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) was founded in 1877 in Providence, Rhode Island. The school was established by a group of women, led by Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf, who wanted to provide design education to the local community. The school initially offered courses in drawing, painting, and design, and gradually expanded its curriculum to include other areas of art and design.
In the early 20th century, RISD began to gain recognition as a leading institution in the field of art and design education. The school's reputation was further enhanced by the establishment of the RISD Museum, which houses an extensive collection of art and design objects from around the world.
In the following decades, RISD continued to expand its academic offerings and facilities. Today, the school offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in areas such as architecture, graphic design, industrial design, painting, sculpture, and textiles.
