Overview
Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) is the national public service broadcaster of Ireland. Established on 1 June 1960, it operates a variety of media platforms including television, radio, and online services. RTÉ is a statutory body, overseen by a board appointed by the Irish Government, and funded by a combination of advertising revenue and a television licence fee.
History
RTÉ's origins can be traced back to the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1926, which led to the establishment of 2RN, the first radio station in the Irish Free State. In 1960, RTÉ was established as a statutory corporation, replacing the original Radio Éireann. The broadcaster launched its first television service, RTÉ Television, on New Year's Eve of the same year. This marked a significant milestone in Irish broadcasting history, as it was the first time that television services were made available to the Irish public.
Services
RTÉ provides a comprehensive range of services, both domestically and internationally. These include two main television channels (RTÉ One and RTÉ2), four national radio stations (RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2fm, RTÉ lyric fm, and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta), and a suite of digital radio stations. Additionally, RTÉ operates an online platform, RTÉ.ie, which offers news, sport, entertainment, and other content. RTÉ also provides an international service through its RTÉ Player platform.
Governance and Funding
RTÉ operates under the Broadcasting Act 2009, which sets out its public service objectives and governance structure. The broadcaster is overseen by a board of twelve members, appointed by the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment. The board is responsible for ensuring that RTÉ fulfils its public service objectives and complies with broadcasting legislation.
RTÉ's funding comes from two main sources: a television licence fee and commercial revenue. The licence fee, which is collected by An Post, contributes approximately half of RTÉ's total income. The remainder comes from commercial revenue, primarily from advertising and sponsorship.
