History

RTÉ One began its broadcasting on 31 December 1961 as Telefís Éireann. It was the first television channel in Ireland. The channel was funded by advertising revenue and a television licence fee. In 1966, the station was renamed as RTÉ Television. In 1978, when a second channel was launched, the station was renamed again as RTÉ One.
