Oxford University Press
History
Oxford University Press (OUP) is a department of the University of Oxford, which traces its origins back to the late 15th century. The first book printed in Oxford was a commentary on the Apostles' Creed attributed to St. Jerome, printed by Theoderic Rood in 1478. The formal establishment of the press occurred in 1586 when the University received a decree from the Star Chamber, granting it the right to print books.
The Press expanded significantly during the 17th and 18th centuries, becoming one of the leading publishers of scholarly works. Notable publications include the first edition of the King James Bible in 1611 and the Oxford English Dictionary, the first edition of which was published in 1884.
