The principle states that an optimal policy has the property that, whatever the initial state and initial decision are, the remaining decisions must constitute an optimal policy with regard to the state resulting from the first decision.

Applications

Optimal control theory has been applied in numerous fields, including aerospace engineering, operations research, and economics. In aerospace engineering, for example, it is used to determine the optimal path for a spacecraft to travel from one point to another. In operations research, it is used to optimize the operation of complex systems, such as supply chains or production lines. In economics, it is used to model and analyze dynamic economic systems, such as the growth of an economy over time.
