Marywood University
Overview
Marywood University is a coeducational, Catholic liberal arts university located in Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States. Established in 1915 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, it was the first Catholic women's college in the state of Pennsylvania. Today, Marywood grants a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees and has a comprehensive doctoral program. The university is composed of four colleges: the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Professional Studies, and the School of Architecture.
History
The origins of Marywood University trace back to 1915, when the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, founded the institution as a women's college. The college was initially located in a single building, known as the Motherhouse, which housed both the academic facilities and the living quarters for the students and the Sisters. Over the years, the college expanded its facilities and academic offerings, becoming a university in 1997. The university has continued to grow and evolve, adding new programs and facilities to meet the changing needs of its students.
Academics
Marywood University offers a wide range of academic programs through its four colleges. The College of Health and Human Services offers programs in areas such as nursing, social work, and nutrition and dietetics. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The College of Professional Studies offers programs in business, education, and communication arts. The School of Architecture, established in 2009, is the first and only school of architecture in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
The university also offers a comprehensive doctoral program, with degrees available in areas such as human development, clinical psychology, and school psychology. In addition to its traditional academic programs, Marywood offers a number of online and hybrid programs, allowing students to pursue their education in a flexible manner.
Campus
The Marywood University campus is located on a 115-acre site in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings, with facilities for academics, student housing, athletics, and other activities. The campus is also home to the Shields Center for Visual Arts, the Swartz Center for Spiritual Life, and the Learning Commons, a state-of-the-art library and learning center.
Student Life
Student life at Marywood University is marked by a variety of activities and organizations. The university offers a number of clubs and organizations, covering a wide range of interests. In addition, the university offers a variety of athletic programs, with teams competing in the NCAA Division III. The university also has a strong commitment to service, with many students participating in volunteer and service-learning opportunities.
