Marsa
Introduction
Marsa is a town located in the South Eastern Region of Malta, with a population of 4,401 people as of March 2014. The name Marsa translates to "the harbour". Marsa is located on the Marsa Creek, a body of water formed by the flow of water from the wieds (valleys) surrounding the area. The town is famous for the Malta Shipbuilding yards, a multi-purpose facility for building, servicing and repairing ships.
History
The history of Marsa dates back to the Phoenician era, when it was used as a harbour. The Romans, who also used Marsa as a port, referred to it as Portus Magnus, meaning 'Great Port'. During the Arab period, the area was known as Al-Marsa, which means 'the port' in Arabic.
Geography
Marsa is located in the inner part of Marsamxett Harbour. The town is surrounded by the localities of Ħamrun and Floriana to the north, Qormi and Paola to the west, and Luqa and Gudja to the south. Marsa is divided into a number of areas, including Albert Town, Marsa Industrial Estates, the Ship Building area, and the Power Station area.
Economy
The economy of Marsa is largely based on industry and shipping. The Marsa Industrial Estate is home to numerous factories, and the Malta Shipbuilding yards are one of the largest ship repair facilities in the Mediterranean. The town also hosts the main electricity generation plant for the island, the Enemalta Power Station.
Culture
Marsa is home to the Marsa Sports Club, which includes a golf course, a polo field, and cricket pitches. The club was founded by British servicemen in 1888, and is one of the oldest sports clubs in Malta. The town also hosts the Marsa Race Track, a horse racing venue.
Education
Marsa has several educational institutions, including the Maria Regina College Marsa Primary School and the Institute of Information Technology. The town also hosts the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), which offers a variety of vocational and professional courses.
Transport
Marsa is a major transport hub in Malta, with the Marsa Park and Ride, the main bus terminus for the south of the island, located in the town. The town also hosts the Malta Railways Museum, which showcases the history of railways in Malta.
