Mark Cuban
Early Life and Education
Mark Cuban was born on July 31, 1958, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the suburb of Mount Lebanon in a working-class Jewish family. His father, Norton Cuban, was an automobile upholsterer, and his mother, Shirley, had various jobs. From a young age, Cuban demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit, selling garbage bags to buy a pair of basketball shoes and later selling stamps and coins.
Cuban attended the University of Pittsburgh for one year before transferring to Indiana University in Bloomington, where he graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from the Kelley School of Business. His decision to attend Indiana University was based on its affordability and the quality of its business program. During his college years, Cuban engaged in various business ventures, including running a bar, a chain letter, and a dance class.
Business Career
Early Ventures
After graduating, Cuban moved to Dallas, Texas, where he initially worked as a bartender and then as a salesperson for Your Business Software, one of the first PC software retailers in the city. He was fired less than a year later for meeting with a client to procure new business instead of opening the store. This incident led him to start his own company, MicroSolutions, a system integrator and software reseller. MicroSolutions quickly became a successful business, and in 1990, Cuban sold it to CompuServe for $6 million, netting approximately $2 million after taxes.
Broadcast.com
In 1995, Cuban and his business partner, Todd Wagner, started Audionet, combining their mutual interest in webcasting and sports. The company later became Broadcast.com, and it grew rapidly, offering a wide range of streaming services. In 1999, Broadcast.com was acquired by Yahoo! for $5.7 billion in stock, marking one of the most significant transactions of the dot-com era. Cuban's strategic exit from Yahoo! stock shortly thereafter preserved his wealth, as the dot-com bubble burst soon after.

Dallas Mavericks Ownership

Under his ownership, the team transformed from perennial underachievers to NBA champions, winning the title in 2011. Cuban's hands-on management style and willingness to invest in player development, facilities, and technology have been credited with the team's success. His tenure has not been without controversy, as Cuban has been fined multiple times by the NBA for his outspoken criticism of referees and league policies.
Media and Entertainment
Cuban has made significant contributions to the media and entertainment industry. He co-founded 2929 Entertainment, a company that encompasses film production, distribution, and exhibition. Through 2929 Entertainment, Cuban has been involved in producing and distributing films such as "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room."
