Lewis University was founded in 1932 as the Holy Name Technical School by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Initially, it served as an all-boys school focused on aviation technology, reflecting the burgeoning interest in aviation during that era. The school was renamed Lewis Holy Name School of Aeronautics in 1935, and it played a significant role during World War II by training pilots and aviation technicians.
In 1952, the institution was renamed Lewis College of Science and Technology, reflecting its expanded curriculum. By 1960, it had become a coeducational institution and was renamed Lewis College. In 1973, it achieved university status, becoming Lewis University. Throughout its history, the university has maintained a commitment to providing education rooted in Catholic and Lasallian values.
