Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,521. The village of Lake Placid is located near the center of the town of North Elba, 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Plattsburgh. Lake Placid, along with nearby Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes region.

History

Lake Placid hosted the 1932 Winter Olympics and the 1980 Winter Olympics. Because of its mountainous surroundings, Lake Placid was chosen as the site of the Winter Olympics not once, but twice. It is the only U.S. city to have twice hosted the Winter Olympic Games.

Climate

Lake Placid experiences a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb), with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. The average annual snowfall is 185 inches (470 cm), allowing for a significant winter sports season.
