Overview
iOS is a mobile operating system developed and distributed by Apple Inc.. It was originally released in 2007 for the iPhone and iPod Touch, which extends to support other Apple devices such as the iPad and the Apple TV. Unlike Microsoft's Windows Phone (Windows 10 Mobile) and Google's Android, iOS is closed source.
History
The development of iOS began with the unveiling of the iPhone in 2007. The iPhone OS 1.0, as it was then known, was a revolutionary operating system that introduced a completely new touch-based user interface. Over the years, Apple has released numerous updates and iterations to the iOS, each bringing new features, improvements, and refinements.
Architecture
The architecture of iOS is layered. It consists of the Cocoa Touch layer, the Media layer, the Core Services layer, and the Core OS layer. Each layer provides certain services to the above layer.
Development
iOS applications can be developed using Objective-C or Swift. Apple provides the free Xcode integrated development environment for the development of iOS applications.
Security
iOS has a strong focus on security. It uses a variety of techniques to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of data, including data protection, access control, network security, and app security.
As of 2020, iOS holds approximately 15% of the global mobile operating system market share.
