History of Berlin
Early History
The history of Berlin begins with its foundation in the 13th century. It became the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1417, and later of Brandenburg-Prussia, and the Kingdom of Prussia. Prussia grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th century, and formed the basis of the German Empire in 1871.
20th Century
After 1900 Berlin became a major world city, known for its leadership roles in science, the humanities, city planning, film, higher education, government, and industries. It also had a role in manufacturing and finance.
Modern History
Modern Berlin is home to renowned universities, orchestras, museums, entertainment venues, and is host to many sporting events. Its urban setting and historical legacy have made it a popular location for international film productions. The city is well known for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts, public transportation networks and a high quality of living.
