Henry Louis Vivian Derozio
Early Life
Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was born on 18th April 1809 in Calcutta, India. His father was Francis Derozio, a well-respected man of Portuguese-Indian descent, and his mother was Sophia Johnson, an Englishwoman. Derozio was the couple's only child.
Education
Derozio received his early education at Dhurramtallah Academy in Kolkata, which was one of the most prestigious schools in India at the time. He was an exceptional student and showed a keen interest in literature from a young age. His teachers recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for writing.
Career as a Poet
Derozio began writing poetry at a young age. His first collection of poems, titled "Poems", was published when he was just 17 years old. The book was well-received and established Derozio as a promising young poet. His poetry was characterized by its romanticism and its exploration of Indian themes and subjects.
Career as an Educator
In addition to his career as a poet, Derozio was also a dedicated educator. He was appointed as a teacher at the Hindu College in Kolkata in 1826, where he taught English literature and history. Derozio was known for his innovative teaching methods and his commitment to his students.
The Derozio Movement
During his time at the Hindu College, Derozio inspired a group of students to question traditional societal norms and beliefs. This group, known as the Young Bengal Movement or the Derozio Movement, played a significant role in the Bengal Renaissance.
Death and Legacy
Derozio died of cholera on 26th December 1831, at the young age of 22. Despite his short life, he left a lasting impact on Indian literature and education. His poetry is still studied and admired today, and his influence on the Bengal Renaissance is widely recognized.
