Henderson
Overview
Henderson is a city located in the U.S. state of Nevada. It is the second largest city in Nevada, after Las Vegas, and is part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Henderson occupies the southeastern end of the valley, at an elevation of approximately 1,330 feet (405 m).
History
The city of Henderson first emerged in the 1940s during World War II as the site of the Basic Magnesium Plant. This plant supplied the US War Department with magnesium for munitions and airplane parts. After the war, many of the workers decided to stay, and Henderson quickly grew into a small city.
Geography and Climate
Henderson is located in the Mojave Desert with wildlife and vegetation typical of the Mojave. The mountains that surround Henderson mostly have gentle slopes. The McCullough Range is closest to the city; most of this range is covered by black rocks from a volcanic explosion millions of years ago.
The city has a desert climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Henderson, like Las Vegas, is known for its resort amenities, including golf courses, spas, and casinos.
Economy
The city's economy is heavily tied to that of Las Vegas, with many Henderson residents working in Las Vegas' tourism and gaming industries. However, Henderson has a more diversified economy, which also includes sectors like finance, construction, and retail.
Education
Henderson is home to several educational institutions, including the College of Southern Nevada, Nevada State College, and the Roseman University of Health Sciences. The city's public schools are operated by the Clark County School District.
Culture and Recreation
Henderson has a vibrant arts scene, with numerous galleries, art installations, and cultural events throughout the year. The city is home to the Henderson Symphony Orchestra and the Henderson Pavilion, the largest outdoor amphitheater in Nevada.
The city also has an extensive system of parks and recreational facilities, including the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve and the Ethel M Botanical Cactus Garden.
Government
Henderson is governed by a city council consisting of a mayor and four council members. The city operates under a council-manager form of government, with the city manager responsible for the day-to-day operations of the city.
