Geography
Gold Coast is located in the southeastern part of Queensland, Australia, and is the sixth-largest city in the country. History
The area now known as Gold Coast was originally inhabited by the Bundjalung people, an Aboriginal Australian group. European settlement began in the early 19th century, with the establishment of a penal colony at Moreton Bay in 1824. The discovery of gold in the hinterland of the city in the late 19th century led to a rapid increase in population and the area was officially named Gold Coast in 1958.
