Flatbush
History
Flatbush, originally known as "Vlacke bos" in Dutch, is a neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn, New York City. The name "Vlacke bos" translates to "flat woodland" or "wooded plain," which accurately describes the geography of the area during the time of Dutch colonization in the 17th century. Flatbush was one of the original six towns of Brooklyn, established in 1651 by Dutch colonists.
Geography
Flatbush is located in the center of Brooklyn. It is bounded by Park Slope and Green-Wood Cemetery to the west, Prospect Park to the north, Crown Heights to the northeast, East Flatbush to the east, and Midwood to the south. The neighborhood is part of Brooklyn Community Board 14.
Demographics
Flatbush is known for its diverse population. It has been a cultural melting pot for many years, with a significant population of Jewish, Italian, and Irish immigrants in the early 20th century. Today, it is home to a large Caribbean community, with immigrants from Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Grenada, and other Caribbean nations. The neighborhood also has a significant African American community, as well as growing numbers of Latinx, Asian, and Middle Eastern residents.
Architecture
Flatbush is notable for its variety of architectural styles. The neighborhood features many Victorian homes, particularly in the Ditmas Park and Prospect Park South areas. These homes, built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are often large and ornate, with wide porches, turrets, and stained glass windows. In addition to these Victorian homes, Flatbush also has many apartment buildings, particularly along major streets like Flatbush Avenue and Ocean Avenue. These buildings range from pre-war architecture to modern designs.
Education
Flatbush is served by the New York City Department of Education. The neighborhood is home to several public and private schools, including Erasmus Hall High School, one of the oldest secondary schools in the United States. Flatbush is also home to Brooklyn College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system.
Transportation
Flatbush is well-served by public transportation. The neighborhood is served by several New York City Subway lines, including the 2, 5, B, and Q trains. Several bus lines also serve the area, including the B41, B35, and B49. Flatbush is also home to the Flatbush Avenue-Brooklyn College subway station, one of the busiest in Brooklyn.
Culture and Recreation
Flatbush is known for its vibrant culture and community events. The neighborhood is home to the Kings Theatre, a historic theater that hosts a variety of performances and events. Flatbush is also home to several parks, including the Parade Ground, which offers sports fields and courts, and Prospect Park, which offers a zoo, a botanical garden, and a large lake.
