Overview
The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is an international governing body of football, futsal, and beach soccer. It is the highest governing body of football.
History
FIFA was founded in 1904 to oversee international competition among the national associations of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Headquartered in Zürich, its membership now comprises 211 national associations.
Structure
FIFA is composed of a General Assembly (FIFA Congress), an Executive Committee, a General Secretariat and various other committees.
Competitions
FIFA organizes and promotes major international football tournaments, notably the World Cup which commenced in 1930 and the Women's World Cup which commenced in 1991.
Controversies
FIFA has been the subject of numerous controversies and allegations of corruption. These include allegations of bribery and vote-rigging in the election of FIFA president Sepp Blatter and his successor, Gianni Infantino.
