Dune 2000
Overview
Dune 2000 is a real-time strategy video game, developed by Intelligent Games and released by Westwood Studios in 1999 for Microsoft Windows. It is a partial remake of Dune II, which is itself based on Frank Herbert's science fiction novel Dune. The game is set in the distant future on the desert planet of Arrakis, also known as Dune, where three houses fight for control of a spice called Melange.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Dune 2000 shares many similarities with Dune II, being a real-time strategy game where the player takes control of one of three houses and must build and manage their base while attacking enemy bases and harvesting spice. The three houses are the noble House Atreides, the insidious House Harkonnen, and the secretive House Ordos, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, unique units, and campaign storyline.
Development
The development of Dune 2000 was led by Intelligent Games, a UK-based company known for their work on other strategy games. The game was published by Westwood Studios, a company famous for pioneering the real-time strategy genre with games like Command & Conquer. The game was built on a modified version of the Command & Conquer: Red Alert engine, which allowed for improved graphics and gameplay mechanics.
Reception
Upon release, Dune 2000 received mixed reviews from critics. While the game's graphics, sound, and gameplay mechanics were praised, it was criticized for its lack of innovation and similarity to Dune II. Despite this, the game has since gained a cult following and is considered a classic of the real-time strategy genre.
Legacy
Dune 2000 had a significant impact on the real-time strategy genre and influenced many subsequent games. It also spawned a sequel, Emperor: Battle for Dune, which was released in 2001. In addition, a fan-made remake of the game, titled Dune 2000: GruntMods Edition, has been released, featuring improved graphics and additional content.
