Dentistry is practiced by a professional known as a dentist, who may specialize in various areas such as periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, and prosthodontics.
History of Dentistry
The history of dentistry dates back to ancient times. The earliest evidence of dental procedures was found in an Indus Valley Civilization site, where teeth have been found with drilled holes, suggesting the practice of dentistry as early as 7000 BC. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans also practiced forms of dentistry, with the Etruscans of Italy well known for their dental prosthetics.
Dental Specialties
There are several recognized dental specialties, each focusing on a specific aspect of oral health. These include:
- Periodontics: This specialty focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.
- Endodontics: Endodontists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of issues related to the dental pulp, which is the innermost part of the tooth.
- Orthodontics: Orthodontists specialize in the correction of misaligned teeth and jaws, often through the use of braces or other appliances.

Dental Procedures

Dental research is a continually evolving field that seeks to develop new methods for preventing, diagnosing, and treating oral health conditions. This includes the development of new materials and techniques for restorative procedures, research into the causes and treatment of oral diseases, and the study of dental genetics.
