Cosmo Kramer
Early Life
Cosmo Kramer, often referred to simply as "Kramer", is a fictional character on the American television sitcom Seinfeld, played by Michael Richards. The character is loosely based on comedian Kenny Kramer, a neighbor of co-creator Larry David.
Kramer is the friend and neighbor of main character Jerry Seinfeld, residing in Apartment 5B, and is friends with George Costanza and Elaine Benes. Of the series' four central characters, only Kramer has no visible means of support; what few jobs he holds seem to be nothing more than larks.
Character
Kramer's character is often described as an amalgamation of slapstick, over-the-top antics, and a unique interpretation of fashion. His trademarks include his upright hairstyle and vintage wardrobe, the combination of which led to his categorization as a "hipster doofus". His look is completed with a usually unbuttoned shirt.
Kramer is known for his extreme honesty and, correspondingly, his lack of tact. He often can't see why his frankness should be problematic. This trait can lead to social faux pas, but can also occasionally make him a sort of unexpected sage, as his honesty and bluntness provide insightful wisdom.
Personality and Traits
Kramer is characterized by a number of personality traits and habits that create a consistent persona, but also allow for a range of unpredictable and often hilarious situations. These include his lack of respect for personal boundaries, his love of smoking cigars, his tendency to slide rather than walk into rooms, his ability to concoct elaborate, nonsensical schemes for simple ends, and his encyclopedic knowledge of seemingly trivial information.
Relationships
Kramer has a unique relationship with each of his friends. With Jerry, he shares a close bond, often entering his apartment without knocking and borrowing items without asking. With Elaine, he shares a more contentious relationship, often resulting in humorous conflict. With George, he shares a mutual respect, despite their vastly different personalities.
Cultural Impact
Kramer's character has had a significant impact on popular culture. His unique mannerisms and catchphrases have become a part of the lexicon, and his approach to life has been the subject of analysis in various cultural studies.
