Columbia TriStar Television
History
Columbia Pictures Television and TriStar Television were two separate entities owned by the Columbia Pictures industry. In 1982, Columbia Pictures Television was formed by merging Columbia Pictures' television operations with the television arm of Bell-Howell, Screen Gems. TriStar Television, on the other hand, was a television production company that was launched in 1986 by TriStar Pictures.
In 1994, both companies were folded into a single television entity, Columbia TriStar Television (CTT). This merger was part of a broader strategy by the parent company, Sony Pictures Entertainment, to consolidate its television operations. The merger was announced on December 21, 1993, and was completed in the spring of 1994.
The newly formed Columbia TriStar Television continued the production and distribution operations of its predecessor companies. It produced and distributed numerous popular and critically acclaimed television shows during its existence. Some of the most notable shows produced by CTT include Seinfeld, Dawson's Creek, and The King of Queens.
In 2001, Columbia TriStar Television was rebranded as Columbia TriStar Domestic Television, before being renamed again in 2002 as Sony Pictures Television. This rebranding was part of a larger corporate restructuring within Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Operations
Columbia TriStar Television's operations were primarily focused on the production and distribution of television programming. The company produced both scripted and unscripted shows, including dramas, comedies, game shows, and reality television. It also distributed television shows and films produced by other companies.
CTT's production operations were based in Los Angeles, California, with additional offices and production facilities located in New York City and other locations around the world. The company's distribution operations were global, with its programming being broadcast in numerous countries.
Impact and Legacy
Columbia TriStar Television had a significant impact on the television industry. The company produced numerous popular and critically acclaimed television shows, many of which are considered classics of the medium.
CTT's programming was known for its high production values and innovative storytelling. The company was also known for its ability to attract top-tier talent, both in front of and behind the camera.
The company's impact can also be seen in its influence on other television production companies. Many of the practices and strategies pioneered by CTT have been adopted by other companies in the industry.
Despite its rebranding and subsequent absorption into Sony Pictures Television, the legacy of Columbia TriStar Television lives on.
