Clovis, New Mexico
Geography
Clovis is located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of New Mexico. It is the county seat of Curry County, and its geographic coordinates are approximately 34°24′45″N 103°12′17″W. The city is situated near the Texas border, with Lubbock, Texas being about 100 miles to the east.


History
The region that is now Clovis was originally inhabited by the Clovis culture, a prehistoric Native American culture named after the city. The first European settlers arrived in the late 19th century, and the city was officially incorporated in 1909. Clovis has a rich history, particularly in relation to the development of the railroad in the American Southwest. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, later known as the Santa Fe Railroad, played a significant role in the city's growth.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, the population of Clovis was 37,775. The city has a diverse population, with a mix of races and ethnicities. The majority of the population is White, followed by Hispanic or Latino, African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.
Economy
Clovis' economy is diverse and robust, with major sectors including agriculture, dairy farming, and the military. The city is home to Cannon Air Force Base, a significant contributor to the local economy. Other major employers in the city include the Clovis Municipal Schools, Curry County, and the City of Clovis.
Education
Clovis is served by the Clovis Municipal School District, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools. The city is also home to Clovis Community College, which offers a variety of two-year degree programs and vocational training.
Culture
Clovis has a vibrant cultural scene, with a particular emphasis on music. The city is known as a birthplace of rock and roll, thanks to the influence of local recording studio owner Norman Petty. Petty's studio attracted musicians from around the country, including Buddy Holly, who recorded many of his biggest hits in Clovis.
Transportation
Clovis is served by a number of major highways, including U.S. Routes 60, 70, and 84, and State Route 209. The city also has a municipal airport, Clovis Municipal Airport, which offers general aviation services. For rail travel, Clovis is a stop on the Amtrak Southwest Chief route.
