History
The City University of New York (CUNY) is a public university system in New York City, and is the largest urban university system in the United States. CUNY was founded in 1847 as the Free Academy of the City of New York, and was later renamed the City College of New York. Over the years, the university system has expanded to include 24 institutions: 11 senior colleges, seven community colleges, an undergraduate honors college, and seven post-graduate institutions.
Governance and structure
CUNY is governed by a Board of Trustees, appointed by the governor of New York. The university system is divided into three divisions: Senior Colleges, Community Colleges, and Graduate and Professional Schools. Each division has its own president and administrative structure.
