The species Panthera spelaea is sometimes considered a subspecies of the modern lion, Panthera leo, due to their close genetic relationship. However, distinct morphological differences and adaptations to cold environments suggest a separate species designation.
The evolutionary history of the cave lion is traced back to the early Pleistocene, with its ancestors believed to have migrated from Africa into Eurasia. The cave lion's fur was likely dense and woolly, providing insulation against the cold climates of the Pleistocene. Unlike modern lions, cave lions probably lacked a mane, as suggested by the absence of mane depictions in prehistoric art and the need for efficient heat retention in cold environments.
Habitat and Distribution
