Bit
Definition
A bit is the most basic unit of information in computing and digital communications. The name is a portmanteau of binary digit. The bit represents a logical state with one of two possible values. These values are most commonly represented as either "1" or "0", but other representations such as true/false, yes/no, on/off, or enabled/disabled are also commonly used.
History
The concept of the binary digit is attributed to Gottfried Leibniz, a 17th-century philosopher and mathematician. Leibniz developed the binary number system, which is the foundation for bits. However, the term "bit" was first used in a computing context by Claude E. Shannon in his seminal 1948 paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication".
