Asa Griggs Candler

Early Life

Asa Griggs Candler was born on December 30, 1851, in Villa Rica, Georgia, United States. He was the eighth of eleven children born to his parents, Samuel Charles Candler and Martha Bernetta Beall. His father was a merchant and a farmer, while his mother was a homemaker. Candler's early education was primarily received at home, under the tutelage of his parents and older siblings.

Career

In 1873, Candler moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he began working as a pharmacist. He purchased a drugstore in 1878, which marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey. In 1887, he bought the formula for a carbonated beverage named Coca-Cola from its inventor, Dr. John Stith Pemberton. Candler's business acumen and marketing strategies led to the rapid growth and success of Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola Enterprise

Candler incorporated The Coca-Cola Company in 1892, with an initial capital of $100,000. He aggressively marketed the product, distributing free drink coupons and plastering the logo on calendars, posters, and notebooks. His innovative marketing strategies led to a significant increase in the brand's popularity and sales. By the early 20th century, Coca-Cola had become a household name across the United States.

Political Career

In addition to his business pursuits, Candler was also involved in politics. He served as the mayor of Atlanta from 1916 to 1919. During his tenure, he implemented several infrastructural improvements, including the expansion of the city's water and sewage systems. He also advocated for the prohibition of alcohol, a stance that was in line with his personal beliefs and the marketing of Coca-Cola as a temperance drink.

Personal Life

Candler married Lucy Elizabeth Howard in 1878. The couple had five children: Charles Howard, Asa Griggs Jr., Lucy Beall, Walter T., and William Beall. Candler was a devout Methodist and contributed significantly to the church and other religious causes. He also donated generously to educational institutions, most notably Emory University, which he helped relocate to Atlanta.

Death and Legacy

Candler died on March 12, 1929, at the age of 77. His legacy lives on through The Coca-Cola Company, which continues to be one of the most recognized and successful brands worldwide. Candler's innovative marketing strategies and business acumen have been studied and emulated by entrepreneurs and business leaders across the globe.
