Airbus Defence and Space
Overview
Airbus Defence and Space is a division of Airbus dedicated to providing defence and aerospace products and services. The division was formed in January 2014 during the restructuring of European Aeronautic Defence and Space (EADS), and is the result of the merger of Astrium, Cassidian and Airbus Military. This restructuring was designed to increase efficiency and profitability, while reducing duplication of effort.
History
The history of Airbus Defence and Space can be traced back to the formation of the consortium company Airbus Industrie GIE in 1970. However, the division as it is known today was only established in 2014, following the restructuring of EADS. The restructuring saw the consolidation of three separate divisions - Astrium, Cassidian and Airbus Military - into a single entity.
Astrium
Astrium was a major European space manufacturer, active in both civilian and military sectors. It was formed in 2000 by the merger of the space divisions of Matra Marconi Space (MMS) and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG (DASA). In 2006, EADS acquired BAE Systems' share of Astrium, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary.
Cassidian
Cassidian, previously known as EADS Defence & Security, was a defence electronics and global security company. It was formed in 2006 as a result of the merger of the defence and security divisions of EADS.
Airbus Military
Airbus Military was the military aircraft division of Airbus. It was responsible for the design, manufacture and marketing of several military aircraft, including the A400M and the C295. In 2009, the division was formally created as a subsidiary of Airbus.

Airbus Defence and Space offers a wide range of products and services, covering areas such as military aircraft, space systems, communication, intelligence and security.
Military Aircraft
The division is responsible for the design, manufacture and marketing of a range of military aircraft. This includes the A400M Atlas, a multi-role military transport aircraft, and the C295, a tactical airlifter and maritime patrol aircraft.
Space Systems
Airbus Defence and Space is a world leader in the design and manufacture of satellite systems. These include communication satellites, Earth observation satellites, navigation satellites, and science and exploration systems.
Communication, Intelligence and Security
The division also provides a range of communication, intelligence and security solutions. These include secure communication systems, cyber security solutions, and intelligence and surveillance systems.
